I didn't think I needed this book, turns out I did!

I should preface my review with the statement -I am not this book's target audience. I was totally blessed to grow up in a house where both my parents liked to cook. My mom taught me to follow recipes and how to mix and match principles to create a new recipe. My dad taught me how to deviate from the plan, try new things, and be creative in the kitchen. I frequently re-arrange my kitchen to make it more efficient, I try new things, I have a list of tried and true meals we love. So, my initial thoughts on if I should read Dinner At Home was -I don't really need this.
But, now that I've read it -I'm so glad I did! Not because I learned a super ton about how to use my kitchen, but because I was reminded how the simplest things are often the most nourishing and budget friendly. I've fallen into the convenience trap -even though I love recipes with a short ingredient list that are simple to prepare. I sometimes spin wildly out of control and make meals more complicated, more expensive, or more stressful than they need to be. What even seasoned cooks need sometimes is a friend to remind them about the delicious flavors of homemade chicken stock and the ease of soaking your own beans. And a voice to say 'don't stress out about hospitality or meals gone astray'. I recommend this to experienced meal providers who would like to get back to basics, to shift from complex recipe systems and trying to reinvent the wheel to finding a calm reassurance in your abilities to feed yourself and your family well. It also makes you mindful of next-generation teaching; equipping your children with skills they will use their whole lives, and building some amazing memories in the process. Some of my best memories are in the kitchen with my parents, nourishing our bodies but also our relationships.
All that being said: What can you expect if you are a kitchen novice? Friendly, self-deprecating encouragement, and the wisdom to help you build that foundation. Read this book, try a few things, build your confidence and comfort level -after that the sky's the limit- you could buy that cookbook that was once intimidating and surprise yourself. Better yet -nourish yourself and those you love with an ease you might not have thought possible.

Broad range of information with something for all of us

I loved the huge range of food and cooking knowledge in this book, and also how it serves regardless of your specific eating choices (vegan, GF, etc). I think it would be super helpful for someone learning to cook, but also contained info that I didn't know having cooked for 20+ years.
Chapters included: Introduction (more entertaining than most and I'm glad I didn't skip it like I usually do :)), Overcoming Fears, Kitchen and Cooking 101, Reading Recipes, A Well-Stocked Kitchen, Saving Money on Food, Menu Planning, Recipes and Cooking Instructions (which had interesting points on how tricky and un-intuitive recipes can be, plus tips for that), Healthy Eating, Growing in Hospitality, Taking the First Steps, and Resources and About the Author. The book also had stories from other cooks (often bloggers) that gave other ideas and experiences. Great read.

This book is full of encouragement to remind us all that we can cook and we don’t even have to get it right on our first or fiftieth try! The tips, techniques, guidelines and printables the author included, such as the homemade produce wash you can easily make yourself, best combinations for herbs/spices for different dishes, common abbreviations, storage limits for food and many more, all work together to offer assistance in the kitchen for whatever stage of the cooking journey you find yourself.
